SOLON, Ohio (WJW) -- Nestlé has announced layoffs affecting 216 employees at its factory in Solon.

A Nestlé spokesperson told FOX 8 News on Monday the food and drink processor is "optimizing" its manufacturing network and shifting production from the Solon factory to its other sites in the U.S.

The Solon factory will still play a role in the company's "growing" out-of-home business, which could mean future expansion "as the business environment evolves," reads a statement.

"We are committed to doing all we can to support our people during this change, such as developing comprehensive separation packages to ease employees’ career transitions and collaborating with state and local officials to provide additional resources and support," reads the statement. "Impacted employees will also be able to apply for open roles at other Nestlé manufacturing facilities, including those in Ohio."

The company employs more than 3,000 people across nine facilities in Ohio, according to the statement.

The company last year announced 77 layoffs at its Solon campus along Bainbridge and Harper roads, beginning on New Year's Eve and continuing through Aug. 2, 2024.

Nestlé Purina PetCare in 2020 announced a new $550 million factory in Williamsburg Township, in Clermont County, which is expected to open later this year and create 300 new jobs.
